Hospital & Home Visits

Every member at the Church of the Incarnation may receive comfort, encouragement and support during times of joy and times of sorrow through the various ministries for care and concern available within the parish. Incarnation is a vital ministry of the church with a wide reaching blessing hand.

The clergy and designated lay pastoral ministers visit our hospitalized and shut-in parishioners to bring them news of the parish, to pray with them, to provide sacramental care, and to be a reminder of God’s aiding presence.

Increasingly hospitalizations are of a shorter and shorter duration. When you anticipate hospitalization, or when it occurs suddenly to you or someone you love, please call the Church Office at (214) 521-5101 or Carol Kadel to notify us of your or your loved one’s hospitalization. We will make every effort to visit you during your time of treatment and will include you in our parish prayers.

Nursing Home Eucharists

In co-ordination with other area Episcopal Churches, Church of the Incarnation regularly provides a sacramental presence in several local nursing homes. These services are arranged and conducted by retired clergy associated with the parish.

Unction of the Sick (Anointing)

Unction (or anointing) of the Sick is an act of healing, conveyed on both the sick and the dying. When this is administered on the deathbed, this traditionally has been called Extreme Unction (and often includes Holy Communion and Absolution). The sacrament consists of laying on of hands and/or anointing with oil along with the appointed prayers as directed in The Book of Common Prayer [1979] (see pp 453-467).

Any parishioner may request the ministry of a priest to receive Unction. At Church of the Incarnation, Unction is offered every Wednesday at noon in Memorial Chapel as part of the celebration of Holy Communion and all are welcome.

N., I lay my hands upon you in the Name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit, beseeching our Lord Jesus Christ to sustain you with his presence, to drive away all sickness of body and spirit, and to give you that victory of life and peace which will enable you to serve him both now and evermore. Amen.

The Priest anoints the sick person, saying
N., I anoint you with oil in the Name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. Amen.

The Priest may add
As you are outwardly anointed with this holy oil, so may our heavenly Father grant you the inward anointing of the Holy Spirit. Of his great mercy, may he forgive you your sins, release you from suffering, and restore you to wholeness and strength. May he deliver you from all evil, preserve you in all goodness, and bring you to everlasting life; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

The Almighty Lord, who is a strong tower to all who put their trust in him, to whom all things in heaven, on earth, and under the earth bow and obey: Be now and evermore your defense, and make you know and feel that the only Name under heaven given for health and salvation is the Name of our Lord Jesus Christ. Amen.
