Lectionary Bible Study

Location: Great Hall Dining Room

From earliest times (inherited from the synagogue and Christ’s own practice) the Church has had the Bible placed before it in an orderly way. Concern for understanding the Bible’s own internal relationships; hearing it in a comprehensive way; and guarding some sense of the narrative line (especially of the Gospels) have been the hallmarks of how the Bible has been presented in the Church. Preaching in the context of Sunday worship takes its bearing from this presentation, but the lessons as chosen reflect certain important relationships that are best understood through teaching and explication. Join us for a time of study of the Bible in the Presentation of the Church. All are welcome and please bring your Bibles (RSV translation preferred).

Meets Wednesdays at 7:30 a.m. (beginning Jan. 11)

Leader: The Rev’d Canon Dr. Chris Seitz (email)

Knowing “The Holy One of Israel”

Location: Choir Room

A study of the Book of Isaiah: It is not surprising that the book of Isaiah is the most quoted prophet in the New Testament. Isaiah’s passionate love for God and His people during a terrible time in the history of his nation has led many biblical scholars to regard Isaiah as the greatest of the Old Testament prophets. In the book of Isaiah, we see God powerfully calling His people to repentance, to faith, and to hope in God whose hand moves the course of history. Here in Isaiah, we see the growing hope in the coming of the Messiah of Israel who would bring salvation not just to his own people, but who also would be a light to the Gentiles. Join us on January 10th as we begin our exploration of a biblical book that will challenge and encourage our faith and trust in the “Holy One of Israel.”

Meets Tuesdays at noon (beginning Jan. 10)

XP for Men

Location: Choir Room

XP takes its name from the first two Greek letters in the word Christ. Early followers of Jesus used it as a short-hand to identify themselves as followers of Jesus. This abbreviation works as our course title as we learn what it means to follow Jesus and to become like him. In this two semester course, we will study and apply the Sermon on the Mount (Matthew 5-7). These chapters deliver the best one-stop study of Jesus’ understanding of the spiritual life and guid- ance on how to live it out in the ordinary relationships of our life.

In XP, we do more than study Scripture. We offer an opportunity to build lasting, faith-centered friendships as we share and pray with one another while applying the lessons of the Sermon on the Mount. The group meets for a weekly study on Wednesday morning at 7 a.m. at the church, breaks into small groups with 4 or 5 other guys to reflect and share, and finishes no later than 9am. Men may choose to be part of the study and small group discussion, or just the teaching piece as their schedules allow.

Meets Wednesdays at 7 a.m.
