Reading Buddies
In 2007, the Church of the Incarnation and the administration of Ben Milam Elementary developed a volunteer program that would enable parishioners to work with at risk children by helping them improve their reading skills, vocabulary words, and other academic areas as requested by the student’s teacher. Over the years, parishioners have worked with numerous students mentoring them and helping them develop all-important reading skills. The original model was established at JW Ray Elementary over a decade ago with the same intent of helping children improve their reading and spelling. Out of these ministries, many friendships have blossomed and the light of God has shined upon these children through the consistent support and love provided by our volunteers.

Ministry Champion Brad Duren started volunteering as a way to give back and make a difference in the life of another. He says, “The unexpected benefit was the way my students have given back to me. To see a child begin to read and become excited about learning is a joyful experience.” Betsy Powell, the Ben Milam Champion, adds, “To my surprise, I became very attached to the school, staff, and students. I don’t know who is more blessed through this program, the students or the volunteers.”
Services
Volunteers work with students on a weekly basis during school hours helping them with their reading and other assignments while providing them with encouragement and support.
Volunteer Opportunities
The time commitment is one hour a week scheduled at the volunteer’s convenience during school hours starting the week of October 4th. The schedule will be determined between the volunteer and teacher.
Volunteer Needs
Unlimited spaces available for volunteers. There are many children who need a loving and supportive friend.
Volunteers do not require special training, but must register with DISD as a volunteer. This is a very simple process that can be done online at www.dallasisd.org or through a form provided by the school.
The key attribute of a successful reading buddy is patience, consistency, persistence, and a love of learning.
Contact the Outreach office (email) if you would like to get involved or have questions about this ministry.
