J.W. Ray Reading Buddies

J.W. Ray Reading Buddies is a volunteer opportunity that ministers to first, second, and third graders at J.W. Ray Learning Center (across Central Expressway from COTI). This is a daytime volunteer opportunity for Incarnation parishioners who enjoy working with young children. The program's mission is to work on a one-on-one basis with children who are at risk of falling behind in their reading skills. Since the ability to read is such a key predictor of a child's success in school, we have chosen to concentrate our efforts on "catching" these children before they fall.

Most volunteers work in the morning for 30 to 45 minutes once a week with a child who has been selected by one of the school's teaching or counseling staff. Volunteers do not require special training, but must register with DISD as a volunteer. This is a very simple process that can be done online @ http://www.dallasisd.org.  For more information, please contact the JW Ray Reading Buddies champion Sandy Mebus or return to Outreach Home.

Previous Champion Kay Hilliard received an award from the Dallas Association of Librarians for her work with the J.W. Ray Reading Buddies. See photos of Awards Ceremony below!
