Godly Play is a Montessori approach to teaching Bible stories, the Sacraments, and sacred time to children. It utilizes discovery method of teaching with well-designed, developmentally appropriate story-telling materials in a child-scale classroom. It is quiet, deliberate, and encouraging for both verbal and nonverbal responses. The structure of the class community follows the pattern of the Eucharist: getting ready (Opening Acclamation), listening and responding to a Bible story (The Word of God), the feast (The Holy Communion), and saying goodbye (Blessing and Dismissal). The goal is that children come to know God–not just about God–and prepare to participate more fully in parish worship as they grow older.
