Sunday School Classes for Middle Elementary Children

Godly Play • Fourth Graders
10:20 a.m. upstairs in the Education Building
Godly Play is a Montessori approach to teaching Bible stories, the Sacraments, and sacred time to children. It utilizes discovery method of teaching with well-designed, developmentally appropriate story-telling materials in a child-scale classroom. It is quiet, deliberate, and encourages both verbal and nonverbal responses. The structure of the class community follows the pattern of the Eucharist—getting ready (Opening Acclamation), listening and responding to a Bible story (The Word of God), the feast (The Holy Communion), and saying goodbye (Blessing and Dismissal). The goal is that children come to know God—not just about God—and prepare to participate more fully in parish worship as they grow older. Click here for a Class schedule. Foundations of the Faith • Fifth Graders
10:20 a.m. upstairs in the Education Building
Room 229
The fifth grade offering of our Sunday School focuses primarily on the Old Testament with an introduction to the Book of Common Prayer and Christian discipleship. We will begin with all of the foundational Genesis stories, then make our way through the history of Israel and the witness of the Hebrew prophets. The children will work in groups to talk through Biblical passages and try to apply them to situations they experience today. The class will also include fellowship, community building and service activities. Click here for a Class Schedule. Confirmation Preparation • Sixth Graders
10:20 a.m. in the Activities Building, Room 230
This class spends the year moving toward the Bishop’s Confirmation visitation in late April. The focus is on the gospels and the teaching of our Lord, the epistles and the teaching of the early church, the Sacraments, and Christian citizenship. Other class activities include two overnights, field trips, service projects, and fellowship events. Regular class attendance and participation in the other activities is expected. Each child also meets individually with a member of the clergy during the year, works with an adult mentor, and is required to memorize selected portions of the Bible.
