TRAC/Fostering Friendships

Champions: Vance and Beth Maultsby

TRAC/Fostering Friendships is an outreach program that works to support TRAC (The Transition Resource Action Center). TRAC offers services to young people, age 14 to 24, who are transitioning from foster care toward self-sufficiency.

Youth who grow up in the foster care system often do not develop life skills. When they reach the age of 18 years, they “age out” of the foster care system and are on their own. In most cases, these young people lack family or community support outside of the child protective services system. They often lack the basic skills needed to find a job, keep an apartment, handle money or make decisions that will advance their independence. TRAC is a one-stop place where young people can find help to get a job, enroll in college, establish a home, access health care, manage a budget, and plan for the future.

As a TRAC volunteer you will have the opportunity to interact directly with the youth of TRAC to develop friendships and to serve as a positive role model. Past volunteer opportunities have included serving with the youth at the Austin Street Shelter, hosting a college send-off celebration, attending a Ranger game with the kids, and providing a Valentine’s Day party for the youth.
