Reading Buddies

Champions: Betsy Powell and Brad Duren

This is a daytime volunteer opportunity for Incarnation parishioners who enjoy working with young children. The program's mission is to work on a one-on-one basis with children who are at risk of falling behind in their reading skills.

Volunteers do not require special training, but must register with DISD as a volunteer. This is a very simple process that can be done online at www.dallasisd.org or through a form provided by the school.

The Reading Buddies Program is ongoing at the following elementary schools:

Ben Milam Elementary is an award winning elementary school located on McKinney Avenue just two blocks north of The Church of the Incarnation. Although many students come from disadvantaged backgrounds, the school has a 100% pass rate on the TAKS state test. Reading Buddy volunteers help to make this possible by spending one hour a week with a child who needs a little extra help

J.W. Ray Elementary is located just across Central Expressway form Church of the Incarnation. Reading Buddies assist first, second, and third graders with their reading skills by spending 30 to 45 minutes once a week with a child who has been selected by one of the school’s teaching or counseling staff.
